How to Play the Fiddle Faster: 5 Essential Tips
As a fiddler, one of the most common questions I get asked is: “How can I play faster?” Speed can be a challenge for many fiddle players, whether you’re a beginner or have been playing for years. If you’re aiming to play lively jigs and reels without losing control or precision, these five tips can help you reach your goal while maintaining your musical quality.
1. Use Short Bows
When aiming for speed, one of the most effective strategies is using shorter bow strokes. This allows for quicker transitions and minimizes the risk of losing control of your rhythm. Think of it as efficient movement: small and precise.
2. Keep Your Movements Small
Efficiency is key when it comes to fast playing. Keep your left-hand fingers close to the strings, moving them as little as possible. The same goes for your bow arm—keep it steady and relaxed. Focus on using your wrist and elbow for movement, avoiding unnecessary flapping or big gestures that can slow you down.
3. Lean Back
It’s natural to tense up and lean forward when faced with a challenging part of a tune. Instead, try leaning back slightly. This sends a message to your body that everything is okay and keeps your muscles relaxed, enabling smoother, faster playing.
4. Stay Calm
Easier said than done, right? When stress kicks in, your muscles tighten, making quick movements difficult. Practice staying calm while playing; this will help you maintain a relaxed posture and allow for faster playing. Practicing with a metronome can help build confidence and maintain a steady pace.
5. Remember to Breathe!
It’s easy to forget to breathe when you’re focusing intently on playing faster. But holding your breath only increases tension, making it harder to stay in control. Make a conscious effort to take deep, steady breaths while playing to keep your body relaxed and fluid.
